Wireless Internet Cards For Laptops

How Cards for Laptops Have Evolved

Over the years, very little has changed with cards for laptops. This is largely in part because the laptop infrastructure for the cards, known as expansion slots, has not changed extensively. The primary changes for cards for laptops in recent years have revolved mostly around the protocols for connections. For the most part, cards for laptops provide exactly the same function as they did when they were first introduced with the exception of a few modifications.

The Tinkering of Engineers

It is often sometimes felt with a little disdain and sometimes intrigue, that engineers simply love to change things whether they need fixing or not. This has been true when speaking in terms of cards for laptops. The shape of the cards, the connectivity technology, and the functionality has remained just about the same since its introduction to the public market. However, the physical size has changed considerably.

Wireless internet cards for laptops are now available that are just about the size of a credit card. The cards also have an additional use as a cell phone with the simple addition of an ear piece with a plug in connection. These cards can easily plug into your laptop expansion slot for wireless use or they can offer a crisp, clear cellular connection. The impressive versatility of today’s technology makes it even more exciting to think what the future will bring.

Technology Changes and Your Connection

Along with cards for laptops, there are cards available for Personal Digital Assistants, or PDA’s. Many laptops are becoming available with an extra slot for use with a card specifically designed for a PDA that can also be used as cards for laptops. Normal PCMCIA expansion cards are much larger than these smaller, credit card sized versions, which is perhaps the biggest difference in the physical appearance of the latest cards for laptops. The integration of the two different technologies has been an exciting development in the industry. Users are waiting for the day when their cards will be the size of a few postage stamps and PCMCIA slots will be removed from laptops completely.

These days the main focus on cards for laptops and most forms of high technology is the unyielding focus on packing more capability into a smaller and smaller package. Rarely do you see antennas or bulky computer accessories with the advances of today’s technology. The extensive emphasis on smaller, faster and better is driving much of today’s technological research. The day is not too far away where laptops will be simply a screen with an incredibly powerful processor. And just after that day comes, an engineer will be waiting, ready to change it and see how to make it better.
